Assistant Professor, Center for General Education, I-Shou University

Abstract

Cross-strait security is the most challenging issue faced by Taiwan Government.

This issue widely affects all aspects of our national defense, diplomatic policy, economic and cultural development and exchange. However, this issue is also under strong international influence, namely the trilateral relation among U.S. China & Taiwan. Since 1996, there has been gradual yet fundamental change in this trilateral relation. The turning point comes when U.S. claims that its cross-strait policy is underpinned by so-called three pillars: One China, Cross-strait dialogue, and peaceful solution. Since then one China principle almost dominates all trilateral engagements. It is also observed that under this influence status-quo of cross-strait relationship i.e. no-independence (at Taiwan side) vs. no forceful unification (at China side) has become the basic policy thinking of three parties, at least the U.S. side.

Aoki Masahiko’s New-Institutionalism Theory

Political Science Department, Nankai University

Abstract

Institutions are self-enforcing systems of shared beliefs of game models. Institution complementarities and path dependence are influential during multiple institutions’ evolution. Comparative Institutional Analysis is based on evolutionary game theory, information economics and agency theory. Economies are complex evolutionary systems. Compared to “the big-bang model” of Russia’s transition, the gradualism model of China’s reform is safer and steadier. Differing from market-friendly and state-development view, Aoki Masahiko’s market-enhancing view and governments’ policies should promote and replenish the coordination of social sectors. We should not oppose government against market. There are four types of states: liberal democratic state, collusive state, social democratic corporatist state and bureaucratic pluralist state. Japan’s political economy can be defined as “bureaucratic pluralism”.

Abstract

From a review of the literature regarding communication problems between Japanese expatriates and local employees in Asian countries, some common areas of difficulty can be found, such as: the inability to say YES/ NO clearly, attitudes toward working as a member of a work group, and attitudes about changing jobs.

To help solve these communication problems, we make some suggestions for cross-cultural training which may help Japanese expatriates and local staffs to understand their mutual cultural differences.

Analysis of Efficiency in Learning Japanese using Comics and Illustrations in Teaching Materials

Yu Hsien Chou

Lecturer of Japanese Language, National open University

Abstract

There are three basic processes in learning Japanese language – learning, memorizing and forgotten. Memorization can be considered as the key process of efficiency in learning whereas forgotten is the problematic step in learning. It is especially critical to emphasize on memorization when learning Japanese. Without memorization, every previously learned grammar, sentence patterns or vocabulary would have to be re-learned from the beginning. In order to enhance and retain the language in memory and not to be easily forgotten, one should not simply learn the language and then try to make up any deficiency later. It is necessary to prudently design teaching materials in order to achieve the highest efficiency in learning. This article discusses the different learning patterns between left brain and right brain. The correlation between memory of learning and incorporations of comics and illustrations in teaching materials is also analyzed.
